Minecraft server RAM calculator
Tell it your software, players, plugins or mods and view distance. You get an honest RAM range and the smallest ESN plan that fits.
Answer a few questions to get an honest RAM range for your server and the smallest ESN plan that fits it. These are rules of thumb from how Minecraft servers usually behave, not a promise: big farms, lots of loaded chunks or heavy mods can need more.
How the estimate works #
- Base: a Paper or Fabric server idles at about 1 GB, vanilla a little more, and Forge or NeoForge starts at about 2–2.5 GB before any players join.
- Players: each player loads chunks around them, so RAM grows with players and with view distance.
- Plugins and mods: most plugins are small; mods are heavier, and large modpacks with 150+ mods often need 6–10 GB.
- Geyser adds a few hundred MB for translating Bedrock players.
ESN's own minimums: Paper, Purpur, Fabric and vanilla need a plan with at least 1 GB, Geyser crossplay at least 1.5 GB, and Forge or NeoForge at least 2 GB.
More RAM doesn't fix every lag #
If the server lags while RAM isn't full, the cause is usually CPU: too many entities, redstone, or a high simulation distance. Lowering simulation-distance to 6–8 and using Paper or Purpur helps more than extra memory. Giving Java far more RAM than it needs can even cause longer garbage-collection pauses. Use the startup flags generator to set memory and Aikar's flags.
