discord.py vs discord.js: which should you use for your bot?

2 min readUpdated Oct 31, 2026

An honest comparison of the two most popular Discord bot libraries: language, learning curve, slash commands, ecosystem and hosting needs.

Both libraries can build the same bots: slash commands, buttons, moderation, music, dashboards. The real difference is the language you're happier writing.

Pick discord.py if… #

  • You already write Python, or you're learning to code. Python reads close to plain English.
  • You want cogs to split a bigger bot into files without much setup.
  • You want to use Python libraries for data, images or AI APIs in your commands.

Pick discord.js if… #

  • You know JavaScript or plan to build a web dashboard in the same language.
  • You like TypeScript and strong editor autocomplete.
  • You want the npm ecosystem for your bot's features.

Does it change hosting? #

Not much. Both run 24/7 on a small bot plan; memory depends more on caches and intents than on the language (see bot RAM). On ESN, pick a Python or Node.js bot server, upload your files, and the server installs your packages on start:

Other options #

Java (JDA), C# (Discord.Net), Go (discordgo) and Rust (serenity) are popular too. ESN runs Java bots and 29 more languages.
