Let Bedrock players join your Java server (Geyser + Floodgate)

4 min readUpdated Oct 31, 2026

Add Geyser and Floodgate to your Paper, Purpur or Fabric server so friends on phone, tablet and Windows (Bedrock Edition) can play with Java players on the same address.

Want friends on phones, tablets or Windows (Bedrock Edition) to play on your Java server? Two free plugins do it: Geyser lets Bedrock players connect, and Floodgate lets them join without owning a Java account. You add them yourself, like any other plugin, and Bedrock players use the same address and port as Java players.

1. Before you start #

  • Server type: this works on Paper and Purpur servers (plugins). Fabric servers can use the Fabric versions of Geyser and Floodgate instead (see Fabric servers below). Vanilla servers can't run them. Not sure which type you have? See Set up a Minecraft server.
  • Version: Geyser follows the newest Bedrock version, so your Java server should be on a recent Minecraft version. If it's older, also add the ViaVersion plugin.
  • RAM: Geyser uses some extra memory. If your server is already close to its limit, read How much RAM does a Minecraft server need? first.
  • Backup: download a copy of your server before adding plugins. See Backups.

2. Download Geyser and Floodgate #

  1. Go to the official download page at geysermc.org/download.
  2. Download Geyser for Spigot / Paper (a file like Geyser-Spigot.jar).
  3. Download Floodgate for Spigot / Paper (a file like floodgate-spigot.jar).

Both are free. Only download them from the official site.

3. Upload them and start the server #

  1. In the panel, open your server, then Files and the plugins folder.
  2. Upload both .jar files.
  3. Restart the server and wait for Done (…)! in the Console. Geyser and Floodgate create their folders and config files on this first start.

4. Point Geyser at your server's port #

Bedrock players connect on the same port as your Java server. Your ESN server's port already accepts Bedrock traffic, so you only need to tell Geyser which port it is.

  1. Find your port at the top of the Console page or on the Network page. It's the number after the colon in ip:port.
  2. In Files, open plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml.
  3. Under bedrock:, change port: 19132 to your server's port, for example:
    bedrock:
      port: 25571
Use your own port number, not this example.
  4. If your config has an auth-type line, set it to floodgate. With Floodgate installed, newer Geyser versions do this on their own.
  5. Save, then Restart the server.

Don't change server-port in server.properties. Your server must keep the port the panel gave it.

5. Join from Bedrock #

  1. In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, go to Play → Servers → Add Server.
  2. Put your server's IP (or domain) in Server Address and your port in Port. They go in separate boxes on Bedrock.
  3. Save and join. Java players keep joining exactly as before.

Phones, tablets and Windows can add servers this way. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can't type in a server address, so console players can't join a private server directly.

Bedrock player names, ops and whitelist #

  • Floodgate puts a dot in front of Bedrock names so they never clash with Java names. A Bedrock player called Steve shows up as .Steve.
  • To make a Bedrock player an operator, type op .Steve in the Console.
  • If you use a whitelist, add Bedrock players with fwhitelist add Steve in the Console.
  • Want a different prefix (or none)? Change username-prefix in plugins/floodgate/config.yml and restart. No prefix can cause name clashes, so keep one if you're not sure.

Fabric servers #

On a Fabric server, download Geyser and Floodgate for Fabric from the same page, plus the Fabric API mod. Upload all three to the mods folder, start once, then set the port in config/Geyser-Fabric/config.yml the same way as step 4.

If Bedrock players can't connect #

  • "Unable to connect to world": check the Bedrock port in Geyser's config matches your server's port exactly, and that you restarted after saving.
  • "Outdated server" or "Outdated client": update Geyser (download the newest jar and replace the old one), and ask players to update Minecraft.
  • Geyser errors in the Console on start: make sure you downloaded the Spigot / Paper version for a Paper or Purpur server, and that both files are in plugins.
  • Kicked with a login or Xbox account error: Floodgate is missing or not loaded. Type plugins in the Console and check that both Geyser and floodgate are listed in green.
  • Some blocks or items look different: that's normal. A few Java-only things have no exact Bedrock match.
