Discord bot hosting vs a VPS vs your own PC: which should you use?

2 min readUpdated Oct 31, 2026

Three ways to keep a bot running, compared honestly: your own computer, a VPS you manage yourself, and managed bot hosting with a panel.

There are three common ways to keep a Discord bot running. None is "best" for everyone; it depends on how much you want to manage yourself.

Side by side #

Your own PCVPSBot hosting (panel)
Online when your PC is offNoYesYes
SetupNoneInstall Linux packages, runtime, a process managerUpload files, set start file, press Start
UpkeepKeep the PC on and awakeSecurity updates, restarts, monitoringMostly your own code

CostYour electricity and internetMonthlyMonthly; on ESN from $0.50/month

Your own PC #

Great for building and testing. Not good for a bot other people rely on, because it goes offline whenever the computer sleeps, restarts or drops off Wi-Fi.

A VPS #

A full virtual server gives you root access and lets you run anything, including several bots, databases and websites. The trade-off is that you run the machine yourself: updates, firewall, a process manager such as systemd or pm2, and fixing it when it breaks.

Bot hosting with a panel #

You upload your code and the host runs it. On ESN you get a web console to read errors, a file manager, SFTP, startup settings for your main file, schedules and live CPU, RAM and disk graphs, and your packages from requirements.txt or package.json are installed each time the server starts. You don't manage the operating system.

The middle option: VPS-lite #

ESN also has VPS-lite: your own Linux container with a shell in the panel console, for scripts and small services. It is not a full VPS: there's no root, apt-get, systemd or Docker. If you need those, a full VPS is the right tool.

How to pick #

  • Just testing? Your PC is fine.
  • One or a few bots and you'd rather write code than run servers? Bot hosting. See how to host a Discord bot 24/7.
  • You want root, Docker or system packages? A full VPS.

FAQ #

Is a VPS better than bot hosting for a Discord bot? #

Not by default. A VPS gives you more control but you have to run and update the server yourself. For one or a few bots, panel bot hosting is usually simpler.

Can I run my bot on my PC 24/7? #

Only while the PC stays on, awake and online. Any restart, sleep or internet drop takes the bot offline.

Does ESN give root access? #

No. Bot servers and VPS-lite run in containers without root. Use a full VPS if you need root, Docker or system packages.

How much does ESN bot hosting cost? #

Bot hosting starts at $0.50/month. See the plans page.
