How to set up ranks and permissions with LuckPerms

Install LuckPerms, create ranks (groups), give them permissions, set up inheritance and a default rank, and add rank prefixes in chat.

LuckPerms is the standard permissions plugin for Paper and Purpur servers. It decides what each player can do, and it's how you make ranks like Member, VIP and Mod.

Install it #

  1. Download LuckPerms for Bukkit/Paper from its official site and upload the jar into plugins (see installing plugins).
  2. Restart the server and check the Console says LuckPerms loaded.
  3. Give yourself full access from the Console: lp user YourName permission set * true (or use op while you set things up).

Create ranks (groups) #

  1. Create a group: lp creategroup member, and the same for vip and mod.
  2. Add permissions: lp group member permission set essentials.home true.
  3. Make higher ranks inherit lower ones: lp group vip parent add member, then lp group mod parent add vip.
  4. Put a player in a rank: lp user PlayerName parent add vip.
  5. Give a rank a chat prefix: lp group vip meta setprefix 10 "&6[VIP] " (shows when your chat plugin supports prefixes, for example EssentialsX Chat with Vault).

The default rank #

Every player is in the default group automatically. Give it the basics everyone should have, or make it inherit your member group: lp group default parent add member.

Use the web editor #

Type lp editor in the Console. LuckPerms prints a link to a web editor where you can click through groups and permissions. When you're done, it gives you a command to apply the changes; paste that back into the Console.

Finding permission names #

  • Most plugins list their permissions on their download page or wiki.
  • lp verbose on shows which permissions are checked when a player uses a command, so you can see exactly what to add.

Tips #

  • Avoid giving * to anyone but owners; it includes every admin command.
  • Use tracks (lp createtrack) if you want promote and demote commands for staff.
