How to set up a Forge or NeoForge modpack server
Run a modpack like ATM10, Pixelmon or Better MC on your own server. Pick the right loader, install the server files, set Java and get your friends in.
Forge or NeoForge? #
Both load the same kind of big content mods. Forge is the original and is used by most packs for 1.20.1 and older. NeoForge split off in 2023 and is the main loader for many 1.21 packs (ATM10, Pixelmon). Use the one your modpack page names. The two are not interchangeable.
1. Pick a plan with enough RAM #
On ESN, Forge and NeoForge need a plan with at least 2 GB, but real modpacks need far more: often 6 to 8 GB, and more for big packs. Find your pack on modpack server hosting for its RAM numbers.
2. Install the modpack #
Modrinth packs: on Forge and NeoForge servers, Files has an Install a modpack button. Search the pack, choose Install pack, then reinstall the server once so the matching loader downloads.
CurseForge packs: download the pack's Server Files (not the client pack) from its CurseForge page. In Startup, set the Minecraft and loader versions the pack names, reinstall, then upload the server folders (mods, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs and so on) with the file manager or SFTP. See uploading files.
3. Set Java and start #
Choose the Java your Minecraft version needs in Startup → Docker Image:
| Minecraft version | Java |
|---|---|
| 1.12.2 – 1.16.5 | Java 8 (most old modpacks need exactly 8) |
| 1.18 – 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.20.5 – 1.21.11 | Java 21 |
| 26.1 and newer | Java 25 |
Pick it in Startup → Docker Image. Wrong Java gives "Unsupported class file version".
Start, accept the EULA and wait. The first start of a modpack can take several minutes while it builds its world and configs.
4. Get players in #
Players install the same pack and version through the CurseForge app, Prism Launcher or the Modrinth app, then join with your ip:port. Version gaps cause mismatched mods errors.
If it crashes #
- Missing mod dependency
- Ticking entity crash
- Java heap space (out of memory)
- Can't keep up
- Watchdog: single tick took 60 seconds
FAQ #
Do I set RAM flags myself? #
No. The panel sets memory from your plan.
Can I add plugins to a Forge server? #
Not normal Paper plugins. Some hybrid servers try to do both but often break mods, so we suggest sticking to mods.
Can Bedrock players join a modded server? #
Usually not in a useful way: Bedrock clients can't see modded blocks and items. Crossplay works best on Paper or light Fabric servers.
Still stuck? Use the live chat on the panel or ask in the ESN Systems Discord. Last updated November 4, 2026.
