Black Friday hosting: how to tell a real deal from a fake one

3 min readUpdated Nov 5, 2026

Five things to check before you buy game server or bot hosting on Black Friday: the renewal price, RAM vs slots, overselling, refund terms and fake discounts.

Black Friday is the best week of the year to buy hosting, and also the week with the most misleading prices. A "90% off" banner can hide a renewal price three times higher than a normal plan, or a "50 slot" server that lags with eight players. Here is what to check before you pay, wherever you buy.

1. Find the renewal price, not just the first one #

Most hosting deals discount the first payment or the first term. After that, the plan renews at its normal price. That's fine as long as you know the number.

  • Look for the words "first month", "first term", "first invoice" or "new customers".
  • Work out what you'd pay over a year: the deal price plus eleven months at the renewal price. Compare that, not the banner.
  • Be wary of deals that only show a per-month price for a 2- or 3-year term paid upfront. The monthly figure looks tiny, but you pay it all on day one.

2. Compare RAM, not "slots" #

Game hosts love selling "player slots". But slots are just a number in a config file: a 50-slot server with 2 GB of RAM still has 2 GB of RAM. What decides whether your server runs smoothly is the memory, the CPU, and what you run on it.

  • For Minecraft, memory depends on plugins, mods and view distance far more than on player count. See how much RAM a Minecraft server needs.
  • Check the plan says how much RAM you get, in GB or MB. If it only lists slots, ask.
  • Check the CPU share too. Two plans with the same RAM can have very different CPU limits.

3. Watch for signs of overselling #

A host can only sell so much from one machine. Very cheap plans are fine when the host is honest about limits; they become a problem when one machine is packed with far more customers than it can serve. Signs to look for:

  • "Unlimited" CPU, RAM or players. Nothing is unlimited; it means the limit isn't written down.
  • No public status page, or no way to see past outages.
  • No word on where the servers are. Location matters for ping.
  • Reviews that all complain about lag at the same time of day.

4. Read the refund and cancel terms #

  • Can you cancel any time, and does the plan run until the end of what you paid for?
  • Is there a refund window, and does it cover sale purchases? Many hosts exclude discounted orders from refunds.
  • Are you locked into a long term at the sale price, or is it monthly?
  • Is backup storage included, or a paid add-on? Losing a world is worse than paying a dollar more.

5. Spot a fake discount #

  • The "was" price was never real. If the regular price only appears during sales, the discount is made up. Search the plan name with an older date, or check an archived copy of the page.
  • The countdown restarts. A timer that resets when you reload the page isn't a deadline.
  • The deal needs a code that "expires in 10 minutes". Real sales have a fixed end date.
  • The checkout price is different. The price on Stripe's or PayPal's page before you pay is the real one. If it doesn't match the banner, stop.

A quick checklist #

  1. First payment and renewal price, both written down.
  2. RAM and CPU for the plan, not just slots.
  3. A status page and a server location.
  4. Cancel terms and refund terms you've actually read.
  5. The final price on the checkout page matches the ad.

How ESN's Black Friday deal measures up #

Since you're on our docs: ESN Hosting's Black Friday sale is 85% off the first payment on monthly plans until December 1, 2026, and the lowest first payment is $0.50. Every plan renews at its normal price, and we list both prices side by side on the Black Friday deals page. Each plan states its RAM, CPU share and disk, our status page is public at status.esnoffical.com, and you can cancel any time. Our terms don't promise refunds, so check the plan fits before you buy, and ask in the ESN Discord if you're not sure which one you need.

FAQ #

Are Black Friday hosting deals worth it? #

They can be, if you check the renewal price and the RAM you actually get. Add up the first year, not just the first month.

What does "first month only" mean on a hosting deal? #

The discount applies to your first payment. After that the plan renews at its normal price unless you cancel.

Is a 50-slot game server better than a 2 GB one? #

Not necessarily. Slots are a setting; RAM and CPU decide performance. A 50-slot server with 2 GB has the same memory as any 2 GB server.
