Prominence II server hosting: RAM, plan and setup

Prominence II: Hasturian Era is an RPG modpack by Cinderstone Studios on Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1, with classes, a talent tree, bosses and a campaign. Its makers publish a clear RAM rule, so sizing is easy.

What Prominence II is #

The official wiki describes Prominence II as a Minecraft 1.20.1 Fabric modpack built around deep RPG progression: a capital city full of NPCs, voiced dialogue, a campaign with custom bosses, and a leveling system with a 100+ node talent tree.

The pack's CurseForge page warns that some unofficial copies may contain malicious content, so only use the official CurseForge or Modrinth pages.

How much RAM Prominence II needs #

Cinderstone Studios' own server guide gives a rule of thumb:

• 3 to 4 players: 8 GB RAM. They call this the minimum they recommend for a smooth experience.
• Each extra player: add 1 GB. So 6 players is 10 GB and 10 players is 14 GB.
• Past about 15 players at once, they suggest scheduled restarts and a stronger CPU.

We follow their numbers here. ESN's largest plan is 16 GB, which by that rule fits up to about 12 players at once.

Which ESN plan fits #

More than about 12 players at once needs more than 16 GB by their rule, which is bigger than any ESN plan. Fabric needs a plan with at least 1 GB on ESN, but don't run Prominence II below 8 GB. Prices are the regular monthly list prices; see plans and billing.

Cinderstone Studios officially partners with another host for one-click installs. You can still self-host it anywhere, including ESN, using the steps below.

CPU

On ESN, 100% CPU is one full core. Minecraft runs most game logic on one main thread, so a big modpack needs a strong core more than many cores. The extra cores still help with chunk loading, world generation and Java garbage collection, which modpacks do a lot of. The Minecraft-ready Pro plans give more CPU per GB (ESN Pro 8GB has 400%, ESN Extreme 8 GB has 250%), so pick Pro when players explore a lot or the pack has heavy automation.

Set up Prominence II on ESN #

Prominence II is on Modrinth, so the panel can install it.

1. Buy a plan and choose Fabric as the Minecraft type.
2. Open Files and choose Install a modpack. Search for Prominence II: Hasturian Era and choose Install pack. It downloads the pack's server mods and config files from Modrinth and sets the Minecraft and loader versions on the Startup page. Files with the same name are kept, so take a backup first if the server already has a world.
3. When it says installed, go to Settings and choose Reinstall Server (Fabric servers show a Reinstall now button) so the matching loader is downloaded.
4. In Startup, set Docker Image to Java 17.
5. Start the server, accept the EULA prompt, and wait for Done.

Fabric servers on ESN start with Aikar's garbage-collection flags, and the panel sets memory from your plan. For custom flags, ask in the ESN Systems Discord.

Once it runs, you can list it on the official Prominence II server browser so players can find it.

Common problems #

• "Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded?" Normal once during the first start. If it repeats while people play, profile it with spark and fix the top cause. See fix "Can't keep up".
• Players can't join, "mismatched mod list" or missing mods. Every player needs the exact same pack version as the server. Update the server and all players together.
• The server crashes at start with a client-only mod. Shaders, minimaps and menu mods sometimes only run on the client. Use the official server files, which leave them out, and don't copy your client mods folder.
• "Unsupported class file major version" or UnsupportedClassVersionError. Wrong Java version. Change Docker Image in Startup and restart.
• OutOfMemoryError or the server stops under load. The pack needs more RAM than your plan has. Lower view-distance or move to a bigger plan. See Minecraft RAM.
• Lag with many players exploring. Pre-generate the world around spawn and set a world border. See the spark steps in fix "Can't keep up".

How much RAM does a Prominence II server need?

Cinderstone Studios recommends 8 GB for 3 to 4 players, plus 1 GB for every extra player. 6 players is 10 GB, 10 players is 14 GB.

Is Prominence II Forge or Fabric?

Fabric, on Minecraft 1.20.1. It needs Java 17.

Can I host Prominence II on ESN?

Yes. The official guide says you can self-host it. On ESN you install it from Modrinth with the panel's modpack installer, then set Java 17 and start.

What's the most players ESN can fit?

By Cinderstone's rule, ESN Pro 16GB fits about 12 players at once. Bigger public servers need more RAM than ESN's largest plan.
