Replit alternative for Discord bots

3 min readUpdated Nov 3, 2026

Replit removed Always On in January 2024, so Discord bots sleep or restart. Why it happens, your options, and how to move your bot to 24/7 hosting.

If your Discord bot lives on Replit, you have probably seen it fall asleep, restart or hit rate limits. Here is why it happens and what to move to instead.

Why bots struggle on Replit #

  • Always On is gone. Replit retired its Always On feature in January 2024. A Repl now stops when you stop using it, unless you pay for a Deployment.
  • The keep-alive trick is fragile. The old "tiny web server + an uptime pinger" workaround depends on Replit not changing how it handles idle projects, and it often breaks without warning.
  • Shared IP rate limits. Many bots share the same outgoing addresses. When one of them gets rate limited by Discord, yours can get "429 Too Many Requests" or a temporary block too.
  • It's an editor first. Replit is built for coding in the browser. A bot just needs a small, steady process that never stops.

Your options #

OptionGood forWatch out for
Your own PCTestingThe bot goes offline when the PC sleeps or shuts down
A VPSPeople comfortable with LinuxYou manage updates, restarts, security and process managers yourself
Bot hosting (like ESN)Running a bot 24/7 with a panelPick enough RAM for your bot (most small bots fit in 256-512 MB)

Heroku is in the same spot: its no-cost dynos ended in November 2022, so most guides that say "host your bot on Heroku" are out of date.

Moving your bot to ESN #

  1. Download your project from Replit (three dots menu → Download as zip), or copy it from GitHub.
  2. Pick a plan. Small Python or Node.js bots run well on ESN Nano (256 MB, $0.50/month) or ESN Starter (512 MB, $0.75/month).
  3. Upload the files with the file manager or SFTP, put your token in the startup variables (not in code), and press Start.
  4. Stop the copy on Replit so the bot doesn't answer twice.

The full walkthrough with screenshots is in Move your bot from Replit, Railway or Heroku. Python bots run on Python 3.12.

FAQ #

Can I still keep a bot online on Replit?

Only with a paid Replit Deployment. A normal Repl stops when you are not using it, and keep-alive pinger tricks are not reliable.

Do I need to change my code to leave Replit?

Usually not. Remove any keep_alive web server code if you only added it for Replit, list your packages in requirements.txt or package.json, and move your token into a startup variable.

How much RAM does a Discord bot need?

Most small bots use well under 256 MB. Music bots and bots in many servers need more. See How much RAM does a Discord bot need.
