Render alternative for Discord bots: spin-down and costs

2 min readUpdated Nov 3, 2026

Render is a popular app platform, but its Free plan is built for web apps, not always-on bots. Here is what that means for a Discord bot, and your options.

Render facts below are from Render's Free instances docs and pricing page, both checked on November 3, 2026.

Why bots struggle on Render's Free plan #

  • Free web services spin down. Render's docs say it spins down a Free web service that goes 15 minutes without inbound traffic (HTTP requests or WebSocket messages). When it's spun down, your bot is offline until something wakes it, which takes about a minute.
  • The usual fix is a pinger. People add a small web server to the bot and use an outside service to hit it every few minutes so it doesn't spin down. That adds a moving part that can fail.
  • Local files are lost. When a Free web service spins down or redeploys, changes to its local files are lost. A bot that saves data to a JSON or SQLite file loses it.
  • There's a monthly cap. Render gives each workspace 750 Free instance hours a month. If they run out, all Free web services are suspended until the next month.
  • Background workers are paid. Render's docs list only static sites, web services, Postgres and Key Value as able to use Free instances. A background worker, the natural fit for a bot, starts on a paid plan.

Moving your bot from Render to ESN #

  1. Get your code. Download your GitHub or GitLab repo as a .zip (Render deploys from your Git repo). Leave node_modules, venv and .git behind; ESN installs packages on every start.
  2. Pick a plan. Most small Python or Node.js bots run on ESN Nano (256 MB, $0.50/month) or ESN Starter (512 MB, $0.75/month). See how much RAM a bot needs.
  3. Upload and start. Upload a .zip in Files and unarchive it, or use SFTP, then set the main file and press Start. Full steps: upload and start your bot.
  4. Copy your secrets. Your token and keys live in Render's Environment settings on Render and don't come with your files. Put them in a .env file or startup variables on ESN, as shown in move your bot to ESN.
  5. List your packages in requirements.txt or package.json so they install on every start. See install packages.
  6. Stop the old copy on Render, or both copies will answer every command.

If you added a tiny web server and a pinger just to keep the bot awake on Render, you can remove them. On ESN the bot keeps running on its own.

When staying on Render is the better choice #

  • Your bot is part of a web app on Render, with a site, a Postgres database and preview environments.
  • You're testing or building a hobby project and don't mind the bot sleeping when nobody is using it.
  • You need regions outside the US or features like autoscaling and private networking.
  • You already pay for a Render instance with spare room.

FAQ #

Why does my Discord bot go offline on Render?

Render spins down Free web services after 15 minutes without inbound traffic. While it's spun down, the bot is disconnected. A paid instance or a host built for always-on bots avoids this.

Can I run a Discord bot as a free background worker on Render?

No. Render's docs say only static sites, web services, Postgres and Key Value can use Free instances, so a background worker needs a paid plan, starting at $7 a month for 512 MB (checked November 3, 2026).

Will my bot's data survive on Render's Free plan?

Not if it's saved to local files. Render says changes to a Free web service's local filesystem are lost when it spins down or redeploys. Use a database, or a host where files stay on disk.
