Railway alternative for Discord bots: costs and moving

3 min readUpdated Nov 3, 2026

Railway is a usage-billed app platform that many Discord bots run on. Here is what a small bot costs there today, when it makes sense to move, and how.

Railway facts below are from Railway's pricing page and its plans docs, both checked on November 3, 2026.

How Railway charges for a bot #

Railway planPriceWhat you get
Trialone-time $5 credit, 30 daysUp to 1 GB RAM and 2 vCPU per service
Free$0 a month, with $1 of credit per monthUp to 0.5 GB RAM and 1 vCPU per service, 1 project
Hobby$5 minimum a month, includes $5 of usageUp to 48 GB RAM per service; you pay extra only above $5
Pro$20 minimum a month, includes $20 of usageTeam features, higher limits

Usage is billed by the second. The listed rates were $0.00000386 per GB of RAM per second and $0.00000772 per vCPU per second. Over a 30-day month that works out to about $10 per GB of RAM and $20 per vCPU running full time (our arithmetic from the listed rates).

Why people move bots off Railway #

  • The bill moves with usage. Railway charges for the RAM and CPU your bot actually uses, so the monthly amount isn't a fixed number. Some people prefer a flat price.
  • The Free plan's credit is small. $1 a month at about $10 per GB-month covers roughly 0.1 GB of RAM running all month, before any CPU. A bot that uses more than that runs past the credit.
  • Hobby has a $5 floor. Even a tiny bot pays the $5 minimum on Hobby.
  • Railway is built for apps and teams. Databases, replicas and regions are great for web apps, but a single bot doesn't need them.

What a small bot costs: Railway vs ESN #

Small bot, about 100-200 MB RAMFree plan if usage stays inside $1 of credit; otherwise Hobby at $5/month minimumESN Nano, 256 MB: $0.50/month flat
Bot that needs 512 MBHobby: a bot really using 512 MB all month is about $5 of RAM at the listed rate, plus CPU, so it lands at or a bit above the $5 minimumESN Starter, 512 MB: $0.75/month flat

Railway's real bill depends on how much your bot actually uses each second, so treat its column as an estimate from the listed rates. ESN prices are from the ESN plans page.

Moving your bot from Railway to ESN #

  1. Get your code. Download your GitHub repo as a .zip (most Railway bots deploy from GitHub), or copy the project folder. Leave node_modules, venv and .git behind; ESN installs packages on every start.
  2. Pick a plan. Most small Python or Node.js bots run on ESN Nano (256 MB, $0.50/month) or ESN Starter (512 MB, $0.75/month). See how much RAM a bot needs.
  3. Upload and start. Upload a .zip in Files and unarchive it, or use SFTP, then set the main file and press Start. Full steps: upload and start your bot.
  4. Copy your secrets. Your token and keys live in Railway's Variables tab on Railway and don't come with your files. Put them in a .env file or startup variables on ESN, as shown in move your bot to ESN.
  5. List your packages in requirements.txt or package.json so they install on every start. See install packages.
  6. Stop the old copy on Railway, or both copies will answer every command.

Keep it running smoothly with the habits in keep your bot online 24/7. Stuck? Open a ticket in the ESN Systems Discord.

When staying on Railway is the better choice #

  • Your bot is part of a bigger app with a database, a dashboard and workers that deploy together.
  • You want push-to-deploy from GitHub and per-second billing that scales down when you use less.
  • You need regions outside the US or replicas. ESN runs in Chicago and New York.
  • Your usage fits in the Free plan's $1 credit and you're happy with its limits.
