Fix "Could not load plugin" / "Unsupported API version"
The server found the plugin but refused to load it. The lines right under "Could not load" say why, and it's usually a version mismatch.
During startup the console shows:
[ERROR]: Could not load 'plugins/Example.jar' in folder 'plugins'
org.bukkit.plugin.InvalidPluginException: Unsupported API version 1.21Other reasons appear in the same spot, such as UnknownDependencyException: Unknown/missing dependency plugins: [Vault] or UnsupportedClassVersionError.
What each reason means #
| Line under "Could not load" | Meaning |
|---|---|
Unsupported API version 1.21 | The plugin was built for a newer Minecraft than your server runs |
Unknown/missing dependency plugins: [Vault] | It needs another plugin that isn't installed |
UnsupportedClassVersionError | It was built for a newer Java than your server uses |
Invalid plugin.yml or Jar does not contain plugin.yml | Not a Bukkit/Paper plugin (often a mod), or a broken download |
Ambiguous plugin name | Two copies of the same plugin in plugins |
Fix "Unsupported API version" #
Each plugin declares an api-version in its plugin.yml. PaperMC's docs say servers with a lower version than that refuse to load the plugin. A plugin marked api-version: '1.21' won't load on 1.20.4. Two ways out:
- Get the plugin build for your version. On its download page (Hangar, Modrinth, SpigotMC), open the versions list and pick the newest one that supports your Minecraft version.
- Or update the server to the version the plugin needs. Download a copy of the world first (backups), because a world can't go back to an older version once loaded. Then set Minecraft Version on the Startup page and use Reinstall Server (see changing a Minecraft version). Check your other plugins support the new version too.
Type version in the console to see exactly what your server runs.
Fix the other reasons #
- Missing dependency: install the plugin it names (Vault, ProtocolLib, PlaceholderAPI and LuckPerms are common ones), in a version for your server.
- Wrong Java: see UnsupportedClassVersionError and pick a newer Java on the Startup page, if your Minecraft version allows it; otherwise use an older plugin build.
- No plugin.yml: you probably downloaded a Fabric or Forge mod. Mods go in
modson a modded server; they don't work on Paper. - Two copies: delete the older jar, for example
Example-1.0.jarnext toExample-1.2.jar.
Plugins on the wrong server type #
Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins only run on Paper, Purpur or Spigot-based servers. Put a plugin jar on a Fabric, Forge or Vanilla server and nothing happens at all: no error, no plugin, because those servers don't read the plugins folder. Paper runs most Spigot plugins, but plugins written only for Paper won't run on Spigot. Check your type in server software.
Steps on ESN #
- Stop the server.
- In Files → plugins, delete the failing jar (and any duplicate).
- Upload the right build (see add plugins).
- Start and check the console for
Enabling Examplewith no error after it. Runpluginsin the console: enabled plugins are listed in green, and a plugin that failed to load is missing from the list.

FAQ #
Can I force an old server to load a newer plugin?
No. The server refuses plugins with a higher api-version. Use an older plugin build or update the server.
Why does my plugin not load on my Fabric server?
Fabric, Forge and Vanilla servers don't load Bukkit or Paper plugins. Use a Paper server or find a Fabric mod that does the same job.
Do I have to update every plugin when I update Minecraft?
Check each one. Many work across versions, but plugins that touch game internals often need a new build for each Minecraft update.
